Victorian Quaker Fund

The Victoria Quaker Fund (called the Fund below) was established in 2015 when Victoria Regional Meeting (VRM) set aside a sum of $1million from the sale price of Friends House at 631 Orrong Road for other uses following Recommendation 2.c from the Friends Centre Ways Forward Committee Report, which was accepted at the August 2012 Regional Meeting.

The Fund was established to provide financial support to Quaker concerns, as outlined in Quaker Faith & Practice 13.02:

Throughout the history of the Religious Society of Friends we have recognized that to anyone may come, at any time, a special inward calling to carry out a particular service. It is characterized by a feeling of having been directly called by God and by an imperative to act.

A concern may arise unexpectedly out of an interest or may creep up on one out of worshipful search for the way forward. It may be in line with current desires and projects or it may cut across them; it may lead to action which is similar to that undertaken by others or may require a brave striking out into the unknown. 

Dates by which proposals can be submitted are normally June 30th and December 31st each year and the committee will discern those to be funded. The committee reports to VRM twice a year. Proposals for funding of more than $5,000 need to be referred to Regional Meeting for final approval.

Proposals, using the outline provided below,

  • which can come from an individual Friend or several Friends
  • which are supported by a minute from a Meeting or Worshipping Group,

can be submitted to the Fund Committee.

The proposal needs to show the way in which the activities further Quaker concerns.

The proposal can include work and/or activities outside the Quaker community.

The Fund’s support can include:

  • Releasing a Friend for service
  • Providing funding for the employment of a Friend by AYM for work related to the concern
  • Providing funding for activities related to the concern
  • Providing funding for resources needed to the concern
  • Providing funding for travel related to the concern
